Nigel Coates

Nigel Coates is a British architect and designer. His mission is to merge art and intelligence with architecture and design. Regardless of the space or object, Coates interprets it with passion, irony and spontaneity. After graduating from the Architectural Association, he immediately demonstrated his genius in the field of architecture. His narrative philosophy is expressed through buildings, interior furnishings and exhibitions around the world, particularly in the United Kingdom and Japan. His experimental works have been exhibited in both artistic and design contexts, as in the case of the ArkAlbion exhibitions in 1984 and Ecstacity in 1992 at the Architectural Association, Mixtacity in 2007 at the Tate Modern and Hypnerotosphere in 2008 at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Coates' output is internationally recognised and significant examples of his work are held in the collections of several museums, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the FRAC in Orléans. He has recently focused on furniture design and lighting systems, collaborating with many Italian companies, including Alessi, Fratelli Boffi, Poltronova and Slamp.
