Gebrüder Thonet Vienna is one of the leading companies in the 2018 edition of Wallpaper* Handmade, the annual exhibition devoted to the combination of craftsmanship and design curated by the international magazine. Mental and physical well-being is the star of the concept for 2018 which features a design spa, an ode to contemporary craftsmanship in which the wooden backrest specifically created by GTV and designed by the Franco-Lebanese designer Charles Kalpakian, who was inspired by the rhomboidal columns of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși, much noted for his ability to synthesize forms, finds its perfect placement. This is an ideal interpretation of the Gebrüder Thonet Vienna design style which has historically been identified with a capacity for formal simplification, a value that allowed the brand be the first to mark the transition from crafts to industry: made of solid beech, the backrest is formed from the meeting of only two of its elements, the central upright section and the round-shaped rungs, another identifying element of GTV.
